The concept
here was to create a tool tailor made for survivalists and users who spend a lot of time outdoors. This makes sense as the vast majority of people who enjoy camping and time in the wilderness, generally take a multi tool of some shape with them.
My first impressions upon unboxing the tool was “WOW”, as always leatherman provide top quality products, this is a sturdy tool, no doubt about it, yet it still comes with a 25 year guarantee, this even covers you if you break the tool.
The tool looks great and feels great in the hand, a commonly mentioned point when discussing multi tools, is hot spots (areas of the tool that are sharp or uncomfortable in the hand) This is my only criticism of the tool, there are lots of hotpots such as the pocket clip and the frame, that has lots of notches etc to account for the positioning of some of the niche tools. which makes it forgivable.
This tool looks very rugged and intimidating. I find the colour scheme of yellow and black, very appealing.
Lets talk tools.
On the outside of the signal are a combo blade and a saw, each of these tools are one hand deploy-able and come razor sharp out of the box. the blade is partially serrated, and the saw is an excellent tool that Leatherman supply on all of their larger multi tools.
Also a pommel/hammer is supplied which is excellent for hammering in steaks to the ground, or breaking nuts open.
On the same part of the tool is a carabiner. which doubles up as a bottle opener.
In terms of niche tools are a couple of things I have never seen on a multi-tool before.
A ferro rod for starting fires with kindling, and a diamond coated blade sharpener. Both do their jobs superbly, and detach from the tool so you can sharpen your blade and use the back of your saw to strike the fire steel.
THere is also a rather loud whistle built into the casing of the ferror rod. albeit rather hard to use, (it takes just the right amount of blowing to get a good noise from.)
On the inside of the tool. are a pair of heavy dty high wuality pliers, as always from Leatherman. Along with a bit driver (suits all of the bits in Leathermans bit kit) a tin opener, and an awl.
All of the tools have locks, released either by a frame lock or the button that releases the diamond coated blade sharpener.
On the pliers there is also a pair of wire cutters with replaceable blades.
The tool can also be locked from opening by a small pin by the head of the tool.
While I think this is a great tool to take on a camping trip or just as an EDC (every day carry) I would not rely entirely on the fire starter and blade sharpener, I would still take a couple of tools designed for these purposes alone. but the items on the tool work great in a pinch
The tool is shipped with a nylon sheath, high quality as always, but for a more luxurious sheath, a leather one is available from Leathermans website.
All of the removable tools are .replaceable from Leatherman’s website
. I think this is a great offering from Leatherman, and personally keep it as an EDC
4.5 stars.
